On Saturday 29 August at 4.00 pm, an exhibition featuring works by the painter Frank Hauptvogel will open at the Panorama Museum in Bad Frankenhausen. It’s well worth a visit to the Panorama Museum – and will remain so throughout the exhibition, which runs until 27 January. – Frank Hauptvogel (born in 1959 in Eisleben) is one of the leading masters of the ‘Leipzig School’. He practises representational painting, sculpture and drawing, skilfully showcasing archetypal characters within intimate landscapes.

“The compelling realism of the depictions owes its origin to nature as a model, yet is entirely crafted from the imagination,” says art critic Bernd Lindner, describing Frank Hauptvogel’s working method.

‘Hauptvogel: “Imaginative Realism” seeks to awaken the good in people and to find an ideal imbued with grace, spiritual beauty and mindfulness. To this end, he has developed an allegorical cast of characters in which the doll or child represents art, the puppeteer represents the artist, and the young, sensitive woman represents the longed-for muse and soulmate – that is, love as an all-encompassing principle of existence.

The settings – Hauptvogel’s ‘gardens’ – are metaphors for nature as a symbol of the soul. Musicians set the tone and transform the scenes into melancholic manifestos of an artistic and aesthetic view of nature and the world, characterised by introspection and harmony. The painter listens to the ‘concertus mundi’, following the ‘sound of the world’ that lies within nature – in the rustling of the trees, the chirping of the birds, the breath of creation, and the depths of the self.

Thus, in this second major museum retrospective of the painter’s work, comprising over 65 works from the past decade and a half, a ‘realism of empathy’ unfolds – one rooted in experience, embodying longing and promising the utmost delight.”
