On 15 and 20 August: Exhibition showcases visions for the future of the School Biology Centre

How should the new Centre for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), to be located on the site of the Botanical Teaching Garden, be designed to bring together sustainability at all levels? Students on the Master’s programme in Architecture at HTWK Leipzig have been exploring this question and have developed architectural concepts, models and digital designs. The results will be presented as part of the free exhibition ‘Making the Future Visible’ on 15 and 20 August 2026 at the School Biology Centre.

Each design will be presented using a physical model and a digital rendering displayed on a tablet. The digital presentation also allows for a direct comparison of the concepts with the School Biology Centre in its current form. During the exhibition opening hours – on 15 August from 10 am to 12 noon and on 20 August from 3 pm to 5 pm – the head of the School Biology Centre, Sebastian Hänsel, will be on hand to answer any questions about the project.

The aim is to construct a new building in line with the so-called ‘Whole Institution Approach’, in which ecological, socio-cultural and economic aspects are comprehensively and holistically integrated. In future, the regional Centre for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is set to become an innovative place of learning and discovery, offering interdisciplinary educational programmes for all age groups.

The School Biology Centre comprises the Open-Air School, the Botany School and the Zoo School, as well as the Botanical Teaching Garden. The latter has been an extracurricular learning venue for over 130 years, offering a diverse range of practical educational programmes centred on nature, the environment and sustainability. The redesign and further development of the site on Schleußiger Weg is firmly anchored in Leipzig’s long-term school building strategy.
