Following the fatal road accident involving a young cyclist on Arthur-Hoffmann-Straße on Wednesday 21 October, ADFC Leipzig is calling for a cycle protest on Friday 30 October at 4.30 pm. The starting point is Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz. Under the slogan ‘Safe cycle paths now!’, the organisers want to commemorate the deceased together and send a clear message calling for greater road safety in Leipzig.

“We are sad and we are angry. Once again, a person has lost their life in Leipzig’s traffic. We want to commemorate the young woman and, at the same time, make it clear that we will no longer accept people being injured or killed whilst cycling or walking,” says ADFC Leipzig, setting out its cause.

“With our demonstration, we are addressing city politicians, the city administration, the public order office, the police and the whole of the city’s community. Safe roads for all road users must finally be made a priority.”

The time has come

With this cycle demonstration, ADFC Leipzig is also calling for immediate measures to improve road safety. Safe cycling facilities must be created as soon as possible on roads such as Arthur-Hoffmann-Straße, Zschochersche Straße, Georg-Schwarz-Straße, Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße, Mockauer Straße, Zweinaundorfer Straße and Breite Straße.

Where permanent solutions cannot be implemented straight away, the ADFC is calling for the introduction of temporary cycle lanes.

Where cycle lanes are necessary for safety, the protection of people must take priority over the preservation of car parking spaces. Where necessary, this may mean removing parking spaces. Necessary delivery zones should be taken into account.

“At the same time, there needs to be consistent monitoring and enforcement against dangerous behaviour on the roads. Illegal parking on pavements and cycle paths, as well as insufficient overtaking distances, pose an immediate danger to people and must be consistently penalised by the police and the public order office,” emphasises the ADFC Leipzig.

Furthermore, it calls for safe routes to school and a 30 km/h speed limit throughout the city. To ensure that necessary measures are not further delayed, sufficient funding must be allocated in the forthcoming city budget to improve road safety.

Commemorating together and calling for change

The cycle demonstration is intended to provide a space for mourning whilst also sending a clear signal that road safety is non-negotiable. “We call on all Leipzig residents to join us and stand up together for safe roads,” says the ADFC, inviting people to the cycle demonstration. “Participants are invited to bring flowers and banners.”

And: “For greater safety for cyclists and pedestrians. For roads where no one has to lose their life.”
