Centre-North: Fire causes extensive damage to property
A car fire broke out last night in Leipzig’s Centre-North district. According to the Leipzig Police Headquarters (PD), the flames initially started in rubbish bins in the area of Blochmannstraße and Kanalstraße, but then spread to a nearby Ford Grand C-Max. The professional fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire quickly, but the damage to property is estimated at 10,000 euros. No one was injured.
The police are now investigating the cause of the fire in the rubbish bins. The relevant specialist unit of the Leipzig Criminal Investigation Department is in charge of the case.
Attempted murder? Investigating judge issues arrest warrant for 63-year-old woman
Following an incident classified as attempted murder, a female suspect is in custody
. As was reported yesterday, the 63-year-old is alleged to have seriously injured a 54-year-old man with a dangerous object at around 12.25 pm on Georg-Schumann-Straße.
According to the police headquarters and the public prosecutor’s office, the victim is currently receiving inpatient treatment and is no longer in a life-threatening condition. The alleged attacker was later arrested in the Südvorstadt district and appeared before an investigating judge today. The judge issued an arrest warrant on the grounds of strong suspicion of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. Based on the information available so far, investigators are working on the assumption that the offence was committed with malice aforethought.
Investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department are currently ongoing to establish the background to the incident, in particular regarding any mental health issues affecting the arrested woman.

Calendar entry: Opening of Leipzig’s Zentralstadion 70 years ago
On 4 August 1956,
Leipzig’s Zentralstadion
was opened to mark the Second German Gymnastics and Sports Festival. SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt and Honvéd Budapest played the opening football match in what was then Germany’s largest sports arena, which SED leader Walter Ulbricht
(1893–1973) had built in his hometown of Leipzig. Risen from the ruins? In fact, the rubble of war formed the foundation for this prestigious project. Over the coming decades, the Zentralstadion was to become the venue for numerous major sporting events.
