The Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Gewandhaus Kapellmeister Andris Nelsons, will bring the concert season to a close with two “Klassik airleben” concerts on the open-air stage in Leipzig’s Rosental before heading into the summer break. Hosted by Malte Arkona, the Gewandhaus Orchestra invites you on a ‘journey through the history of film music’ and thanks its audience for their loyalty with a medley of the greatest musical highlights from film history since the end of the silent film era.

In Leipzig’s most beautiful open-air concert venue, the Rosentalwiese, a total of 15 masterpieces from almost every decade of film history will be performed by legendary composers such as Max Steiner, Ennio Morricone, John Williams and Hans Zimmer, immersing the audience in scenes from films including *Gone with the Wind*, *Cinema Paradiso*, *Jurassic Park* and *Inception*.

‘For many years now, “Klassik airleben” has been one of the highlights of the summer in the city of music, Leipzig. It fills me with pride and joy to welcome our audience for the 15th time to this particularly popular and unique event organised by the Gewandhaus Orchestra, through which we express our heartfelt thanks to our guests for their loyalty at the end of every concert season.

With the support of strong partners, we have once again been able to organise two open-air concerts in Leipzig’s Rosental with free admission for our audience, so that the music of our Gewandhaus Orchestra is once again accessible and can be enjoyed by everyone free of charge. “Music and film bring people together – let’s celebrate that and spend two wonderful evenings together in Leipzig’s Rosental!” says Gewandhaus Director Prof. Andreas Schulz, looking forward to the upcoming concerts.

Due to a UEFA EURO 2024 football match taking place at the nearby stadium, this year’s Rosental concerts will, as a one-off, take place on Saturday 22 June at 8.30 pm and Sunday 23 June at 6 pm. On Saturday afternoon, families and children can get into the spirit of the evening from 4.00 pm onwards in the family area.

Even the youngest children can discover the magic of music there at mini-concerts and let their creativity run wild on the instrument and craft trail.

To make this unrivalled open-air event possible with free admission, we need strong partners. ‘Klassik airleben’ is made possible by the presenter, Porsche Leipzig, and the co-sponsors Leipziger Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH, GP Günter Papenburg AG, Goldschmidt Holding GmbH, LBBW Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, VNG AG, Radeberger Gruppe KG and Gerhard D. Wempe GmbH & Co. KG.

The first Rosental concert was moved to the park in 2003 as the closing open-air event of the Gewandhaus Day, because the market square could not be used as a venue due to Citytunnel construction work. At the same time, the neighbouring zoo was celebrating its 125th anniversary, to which the concert was dedicated. In both 2003 and 2004, Herbert Blomstedt conducted the open-air concerts in the Rosental – which at that time was still fenced off and required tickets. The event became the traditional finale to the Gewandhaus season, but had to be cancelled for a time due to drastic funding cuts in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Since Porsche became a sponsor in 2014, ‘Klassik airleben’ has been held in the Rosental with free admission. In 2024, it will therefore be the 15th year since 2003 that the Gewandhaus has been organising the concerts in the Rosental, where the Gewandhaus Orchestra – including 2024 – has performed a total of 29 concerts.
