In the Name of the Sacred Centre: The exhibition of award-winning works, featuring paintings by Hans-Hendrik Grimmling, opens on Friday

On 11 July, the 32nd Leipzig Annual Exhibition closed its doors, having welcomed more than 3,000 visitors. But that wasn’t the end of it. Under the title ‘In the Name of the Sacred Centre’, the exhibition by the winner of the 31st Leipzig Annual Exhibition, featuring paintings by Hans-Hendrik Grimmling, will open under the title “In the Name of the Sacred Centre”. This will also mark the 25th prize-winner’s exhibition.

In his prize-winner’s exhibition, Hans-Hendrik Grimmling presents visually striking paintings that do not shy away from a critical examination of social conditions and power structures.

Hans-Hendrik Grimmling, born in Zwenkau in 1947 and now living and working in Berlin, impressed the jury of the 31st Leipzig Annual Exhibition last year with his works ‘der große seher’ and ‘bedingtes aufbegehren I und II’.

The jury’s statement read: “This award honours an artistic stance that upholds tradition as the foundation for the future: classical in composition, expressive in effect, moving in theme, forward-looking in its conservatism, universal in pictorial grammar, compelling in its vividness, and dignified in its imagery.”

The prize, worth €10,000, at the 31st Leipzig Annual Exhibition 2025 – sponsored by Sparkasse Leipzig, the Elke and Thomas Loest Foundation and the Doris Günther Foundation – was dedicated to the artist and women’s rights activist Philippine Wolff-Arndt (1849–1940).

The opening reception begins on 24 July at 6.00 pm with a welcome address by Prof. Rainer Schade, Chair of Leipziger Jahresausstellung e.V., and an opening speech by art historian and curator Christoph Tannert.

The exhibition runs until 15 August, Wednesday to Friday, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm and on Saturdays from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm in the basement of HALLE 14 at the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, Spinnereistr. 7.
