To mark his 90th birthday, the Leipzig Museum of Local History is staging an exhibition entitled ‘Commercial Art and Posters’, showcasing works by the Leipzig-based artist Jochen Fiedler on the second floor of the Old Town Hall from 1 July to 6 September 2026. The artist has selected his own works from recent years, which make pointed and expressive statements on current and socially critical issues.
The graphic designer Jochen Fiedler, born on 12 July 1936 in Bunzlau, Silesia, has had a decisive influence on poster design in Leipzig for decades. In addition to promotional designs for the opera, the zoo and many other venues, his posters captivate viewers with their contemporary and critical social commentary, delivered through an unmistakable and striking visual language.

Following an apprenticeship as a commercial artist at the KONSUM cooperative in Görlitz, Jochen Fiedler studied at the Technical College for Advertising and Design in Berlin-Oberschöneweide from 1956. He has been self-employed in Leipzig since 1961 and has worked closely ever since with his future wife, the graphic designer Jutta Damm. From 1980 to 2001, Jochen Fiedler taught at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Applied Sciences in Halle. Under Artistic Director Udo Zimmermann, from 1990 to 1997, he and Jutta Damm-Fiedler were responsible for the overall design of the promotional materials for the Leipzig Opera. In 2011, Fiedler co-founded plakat-sozial e. V. with others. Since then, the association has organised numerous exhibitions featuring internationally renowned poster artists who take a political and socially critical stance.
The exhibition is open free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, at the Old Town Hall.
Opening hours: Tuesday–Sunday and public holidays, 10 am–6 pm
