The Saxony Regional Directorate (LDS) has approved a section of the complex construction project on Georg-Schumann-Straße between Delitzscher Straße/Eutritzscher Straße (Chausseehaus) and Böhmestraße in the city of Leipzig by means of a planning approval decision. This was announced on Wednesday, 21 October. The project is part of the Leipzig Transport Authority’s (LVB) scheme to modernise the tram infrastructure. The decision regarding the municipal part of the project was taken at the city council meeting on 2 September.

“With the approval for the track extension on Georg-Schumann-Straße, the conditions are being created for a more modern, efficient and safer tram infrastructure. Wider tram trains with up to 20 per cent more seats will improve passenger comfort and, in particular, increase public transport capacity in the dynamically growing city of Leipzig,” explains LDS President Béla Bélafi.

The plans for the LVB section involve a complete overhaul of the track, catenary and traction power systems. The most important element of this is that, between Chausseehaus and Böhmestraße, the track will be widened to accommodate wider tram trains (2.40 metres). Georg-Schumann-Straße, the route of Line 11, is one of the key routes that must be made accessible to the wider trams as soon as possible.

The outbound track between the start of the construction site and Kanalstraße, and the inbound track between Ehrensteinstraße and the Delitzscher Straße/Eutritzscher Straße junction, will in future be laid on a green track bed. In addition, a new stop with level access is being built between Ehrensteinstraße and Prellerstraße.

At 5.4 kilometres in length, Georg-Schumann-Straße is a vital link between the north of Leipzig and the city centre. It passes through the districts of Zentrum-Nord, Gohlis-Süd, Möckern and Wahren and is served by tram lines 10 (Lößnig – Wahren) and 11 (Schkeuditz – Markkleeberg-Ost).

The State Directorate has also announced that the planning approval decision will be made available for public inspection in the city of Leipzig. The public inspection will be publicised in advance in accordance with local custom. In addition, the State Directorate will publish the planning approval decision on its official notice portal. Further implementation of the project is the responsibility of LVB as the project sponsor.

However, as the city and the LVB are coordinating their efforts, the start date for construction is essentially fixed. This is because on 2 September – following a heated debate about trees and parking spaces – the city council approved the city’s proposal

, according to which construction is due to begin in April 2027. Construction is then likely to be completed in May 2028.

The City of Leipzig itself provides information about this construction project on its website
