The summer of the ‘50 Years of Grünau’ anniversary year is slowly drawing to a close. The Schönau Park Festival marks the traditional highlight of Grünau’s cultural summer. This year, the festival takes place from 21 to 23 August, and once again there are plenty of events in store for visitors.
It all kicks off on Thursday with the summer cinema screening of ‘La Boum 2 – The Party Goes On’, a classic from the 1980s. On Friday, the park will be rocking to ‘Beatz im Block’; under the motto ‘Love Music! Respect Diversity! Support Individuality!’, the 10th edition of the Hip-Hop Open Air will take place.
On Saturday and Sunday, the festival will be for the whole family. With music of all genres, dancing, magic, acrobatics and much more, there’ll be something for everyone.
We met up with Oliver Kobe at the KOMM-Haus on 11 August to find out more.
Oliver, with the Schönau Park Festival taking place in Grünau’s anniversary year, do you have anything special planned?
What’s special this year, of course, is that Grünau is turning 50, and we want to celebrate this in style with the Schönau Park Festival as the highlight of Grünau’s cultural summer. One special feature this year is an interactive programme where residents of Grünau and other guests can vote for the ‘Parkfest Star 2026’.
So, ‘Grünau’s Search for the Parkfest Star 2026’ – how does that work?
On Sunday, between 1 pm and 4 pm, amateur performers – that is, street performers and up-and-coming artists – will be taking to the stage. The audience can then vote to choose the Parkfest Star from among them.
The programme also mentions a world premiere. Can you tell us more about that?
Exactly – our Leipzig-based pop star Frank Vonthal has sat down once again and tried to capture the atmosphere and spirit of Grünau in a song. His last song, ‘Wir sind Grünau’, was released to mark the 40th anniversary in 2016 and became the ‘anthem for Grünau’ – all with a bit of a wink, of course. The new anthem will be presented by Frank Vonthal together with the ‘Grünau Women’s Choir’.

Otherwise, the Schönau Park Festival is, as always, a festival for the whole family – for older people and for children – with a whole host of activities on offer. We make a point of ensuring that it’s not just commercial attractions on offer. Of course, there are fairground operators you’ll recognise from elsewhere, there are bumper cars – which are definitely great fun – and the usual small-scale fairground attractions. But alongside these, there are also lots of socio-cultural organisations offering hands-on activities. These are completely free of charge, so even if you’re on a tight budget, you can still go to the festival, let your children have fun, and take a leisurely stroll yourself to enjoy a lovely afternoon.
What about accessibility?
The festival is accessible in the sense that you can, of course, get there relatively easily via the normal park paths. If necessary, you can drive relatively close to the entrance from Gaskestraße; from there, it’s only a few metres into the park. Of course, it’s a park, so there are grassy areas too, and you’ll just have to see how you get on there with a wheelchair. But I’m sure you’ll find someone to help.
