Hello Leipzig – this is how Friday 24 July 2026 kicks off the weekend

A two-day children’s festival right in the city centre – this weekend, Augustuspatz will be transformed into a fun-filled adventure course for children on their summer holidays. For residents living along the railway line in Wahren, there’s a brief respite, whilst at the Parkbühne, Australian rock legends Rose Tattoo bid farewell to their European audience. Quieter, yet no less significant, things are happening in Lene Voigt Park: Leipzig’s Songs in the Green.

Change of road closure in Leipzig-Wahren

Relief on Linkelstraße in Leipzig-Wahren. According to Deutsche Bahn, the railway underpass is due to reopen to road traffic from today. However, this relief comes at a price, as the next phase of construction is set to begin simultaneously on the neighbouring Pittlerstraße. The underpass there will now remain closed again until 30 July 2026.

With this alternating closure plan, Deutsche Bahn aims to ensure that at least one of the two key transport links in the north of Leipzig remains open at all times during the extensive construction work. The current restrictions are part of a major infrastructure project by DB InfraGO. In Wahren, the railway bridges on Linkelstraße and Pittlerstraße are being completely rebuilt. They date from 1902 and, according to the railway company, have reached the end of their technical service life.

As part of the project, the existing structures will be completely dismantled and replaced with new ones. The plans also include new substructures, the installation of the new bridges and the subsequent restoration of tracks and roads. Listed bridge components are to be reinstalled once the work is complete. The entire project is expected to run until the second quarter of 2027.

Music for the heart and mind in the great outdoors

Lene-Voigt-Park in Leipzig-Reudnitz is turning into a cultural stage today and tomorrow. The 23rd “Leipzig Song Festival” presents singer-songwriters, folk singers and acoustic music outside the commercial mainstream. Admission is by donation. The programme kicks off today at 7 pm and ends around 10 pm.

ANGELS’ SHARE will open the festival evening with Irish-Celtic folk. On Saturday, the programme runs from 5 pm to 10 pm. Under the title ‘LIVE² best of open air’, the line-up includes Kupfer, Sarah Wendlandt, Christoph Hahn, Môrre, Julia Bloom and Nadine Maria Schmidt. The Leipzig Song Festival has been running for more than two decades and has established itself as a platform for German-language and international song culture, as well as for artists who perform their own songs. The organisers are “Die Liedertour” and the cultural centre Mühlstraße 14 e. V., which is committed to promoting song art, folk and singer-songwriter music.

Lene-Voigt-Park has once again been chosen as the venue, having established itself in recent years as an open-air cultural venue in the east of Leipzig. The festival is also part of Leipzig’s Cultural Summer and ranks among the city’s most traditional events for singer-songwriter music.

Rose Tattoo on their farewell tour

Things will be considerably louder, however, in Clara Zetkin Park. The Australian hard rock band Rose Tattoo are performing there today as part of their “Rock’n’Roll Outlaws – One Last Ride” tour. The concert starts at 6.45 pm, with doors opening at 6 pm.

The band, which has been active in Sydney, Australia, since the mid-1970s, is regarded as a major influence on numerous later rock and metal bands thanks to their bluesy hard rock. For example, the American band ‘Guns N’ Roses’ covered the song ‘Nice Boys’ in 1986; the two groups went on tour together in 1993 and 2007. The current tour has been announced as a farewell to European stages.

Rose Tattoo were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame on 16 August 2006 in Melbourne. The ARIA lists Rose Tattoo among its official 2006 inductees, alongside Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Helen Reddy, Daddy Cool, Icehouse and Lobby Loyde. The induction is regarded as one of the highest honours in the Australian music industry.

Due to the extremely limited parking facilities at Clara Zetkin Park, it is recommended that you travel by public transport. The tram stops Rennbahn, Klingerweg and Marschnerstraße are just a few minutes’ walk from the venue and are served by several routes from the city centre and the main railway station.

Children’s holiday fun in the city centre

On Saturday and Sunday, Augustusplatz in Leipzig will become a meeting place for families from 11 am to 6 pm each day. At the 7th Leipzig Children’s Festival, visitors can look forward to a free programme of hands-on activities for children of all ages. According to the organisers, around 30 partners, clubs and companies are taking part, offering some 60 free hands-on activities.

The programme spans six themed areas, including sport, creativity, health, action and adventure. It is complemented by a stage and numerous games and craft activities. The Leipzig Group will also be represented with its activity stall ‘Children’s Festival with Bini, Enni and Wassi’.

In addition, the Nintendo Summer Tour 2026 will be stopping off at Augustusplatz as part of the Children’s and Family Festival. Entry to the festival is free on both days of the event.
