As part of the BookTalkWalks series, a philosopher from Leipzig takes part in a group walk through the city, using easily accessible language to introduce a book by a well-known Jewish thinker from the past – drawing on locations in Leipzig linked to the book’s themes. As they walk from place to place, participants are encouraged to engage in thoughtful conversation.
On 19 September, the Leipzig philosopher Prof. Dr Kerstin Andermann from the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Leipzig invites you to discover the book by the renowned Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas, *The Trace of the Other*, whilst out for a walk. The BookTalkWalk will be moderated by Dr Rainer Totzke (Transformatorenwerk Leipzig e.V.)
Kerstin Andermann says of Emmanuel Lévinas’ ‘The Trace of the Other’: “The philosophy of Emmanuel Lévinas (1906–1995) emerged from the experience of the Holocaust
. It centres on the ethical relationship with the Other and on the responsibility we have for one another. In *The Trace of the Other*, Lévinas explores the question of responsibility in close connection with the question of being as a whole and the ethical dimension in the relationship between Being and the existing. From this, he defines an ethical experience in which the movement towards the Other does not revert to the identity of the Self, but persists as an attitude. Today, Lévinas’s philosophy is highly relevant because we are still called upon to take responsibility for the Other, and our responsibility towards that which increasingly transcends our human relationships is also becoming ever clearer.”
