Hello Leipzig: Here’s how Tuesday 22 September 2026 begins

A milestone in the history of the women’s movement is being commemorated today at the Capa-Haus. The city also has something truly grand in the pipeline at the Chausseehaus – and will be providing details in a live broadcast this evening. LZ outlines what’s in store. Today, the city centre will explore what it’s like to have to live with serious forgetfulness. And on the A14, it’s going to be a tight squeeze today for those heading to the exhibition centre.

City addresses protracted major roadworks

Coming from the city centre, it is the bottleneck through which traffic heads north-west and directly north: the square in front of the Chausseehaus, at the end of Eutritzscher Straße. From July 2027, the square and its surroundings are set to undergo a major redevelopment.

The city is holding a digital event today to provide information on what is to be built and what this will mean during the construction period, particularly for local residents and regular users. A live stream will begin at 6.30 pm and can be watched online HERE without registration. The focus of the evening will be on the scope and schedule of the planned works on Georg-Schumann-Straße, specifically the section between Böhmestraße and Delitzscher Straße. The project thus affects the most important transport hub in the north of Leipzig and is set to transform the road layout, tram infrastructure and utility networks simultaneously.

Plans include the renewal of the tracks and the widening of the carriageways. A new accessible tram stop is to be built at the junction with Ehrensteinstraße. The project also includes new street lighting, upgraded traffic lights, new footpaths and cycle paths, as well as green spaces. Water pipes are to be renovated, 46 trees replanted and a new drinking fountain installed.

Exit closures on the A14

The motorway exits at the Leipzig Trade Fair will remain closed for several days from today. Motorists must prepare for diversions as the road surface requires resurfacing. Affected sections are, in the direction of Dresden, the exit to Messe-Allee heading into the city, and, in the direction of Magdeburg, the exit to Messe-Allee heading out of the city. According to the federal motorway operator Autobahn GmbH, the works and associated closures will run from today, 22 September, until 1 October 2026.

Official traffic warnings from the Saxony Police specify the timeframe: the closures are due to begin today at 8.00 am and are scheduled to end on 1 October at 6.00 pm. There are no plans to close the A14 itself. The diversions will take place within the Messegelände junction, which may lead to traffic build-up. The exhibition centre itself advises visitors to use the B2 federal road to reach the site whilst the renovation work is underway.

Experiencing dementia

The reading glasses you can’t find, forgetting birthdays, opening the wrong door. What is sometimes merely a brief lapse of memory can, on a larger scale, be a life-changing condition. A simulator is being used today in Leipzig city centre to raise awareness of the everyday realities faced by people with dementia.

Under the title ‘Experiencing life with dementia’, relatives and members of the public can visit the Mobile Senior Citizens’ Advice bus from 10.00 to 15.00 at the Citytunnel entrance in front of the music school, at the corner of Petersstraße and Schillerstraße, to experience for themselves the difficulties that everyday tasks can pose for people with dementia. The ‘Hands-on Dementia©’ simulator is being used. It enables participants to experience typical situations such as eating, getting dressed and finding their way around from the perspective of someone living with dementia. Attendance is free of charge; no prior registration is required.

The event is part of the programme of activities surrounding World Alzheimer’s Day and Dementia Week 2026, which in Saxony are being held under the slogan ‘Dementia – (not) a question of age’. The state-wide list of events is published online HERE. The vehicle can be recognised by its signage and a purple flag. Anyone unable to attend today’s session will have a second opportunity later this week: on Friday 25 September 2026, ‘Gaining an Insight into Life with Dementia’ will be offered again from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm at the same venue.

Dementia is an impairment of mental abilities such as memory, thinking and orientation, which can become so severe that it becomes increasingly difficult to cope with everyday life independently; the most common cause is Alzheimer’s disease. The risk increases sharply with age; however, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), dementia is not a normal part of ageing and can, in principle, also affect younger people.

According to calculations by the German Alzheimer’s Association, there are currently around 1.8 million people living with dementia in Germany; in 2023 alone, up to 445,000 people aged 65 and over were newly diagnosed. Without significant progress in prevention or treatment, the German Alzheimer’s Association estimates that by 2050 there will be between 2.3 and 2.7 million people aged 65 and over living with dementia.

Anniversary of a change of direction

‘Neue Bahnen’ was not a major road-building project, but it nevertheless made an important contribution to progress – specifically, to the way of thinking and acting with regard to women’s lives and their rights. Today, an evening event at the Capa-Haus in Leipzig commemorates the history of the organised women’s movement and one of its most important publications.

Under the title “The Power of Feminist Public Sphere – 160 Years of ‘Neue Bahnen’ and the Women’s Movement”, Prof. Dr Susanne Schötz and PD Dr Astrid Franzke will speak from 6 pm in the Gerda Taro Lounge at the Capa-Haus (Jahnallee 61). Admission to the event is free. The Louise-Otto-Peters-Gesellschaft e. V. is organising the evening as part of a project funded by the Digital German Women’s Archive.

The focus is on how the women’s movement established its own public presence long before the internet and social media. *Neue Bahnen* reported on the activities of the General German Women’s Association and its branches, highlighted opportunities for political and organisational work, and addressed, amongst other things, education and paid employment for women, as well as international initiatives, technical innovations, art, literature and culture. Schötz and Franzke shed light on the magazine’s significance for networking and the dissemination of knowledge within the women’s movement.

The General German Women’s Association had been founded during the Women’s Conference held in Leipzig from 15 to 18 October 1865, with significant involvement from Louise Otto-Peters, Auguste Schmidt and other women. Among its key concerns were better educational and employment opportunities for women.
