Once again, a cyclist has been injured in a road accident in Leipzig today. Around midday, a collision with a car took place on Antonienstraße. In Lindenau, a shop assistant also sustained serious injuries. He had been attacked with a knife. And: Leipzig’s Football Lions will roar one last time this season tomorrow. The LZ summarises the key events from Friday, 21 August 2026, in Leipzig and beyond.
Bicycle accident on Antonienstraße
A car is parked on the road with a shattered windscreen. Not far away, a bicycle is leaning against a lamppost – both wheels bent, the chain come off. It’s a sight that immediately gives you a queasy feeling in the stomach. And it raises the question: what happened here? As the LZ learnt from the Leipzig Police Headquarters, a road traffic accident involving a car and a female cyclist took place today at around 11.30 am on Antonienstraße.
According to reports, the car had come from Altranstädter Straße and was attempting to turn right onto Antonienstraße. In doing so, the driver failed to spot a road cyclist crossing the road, resulting in a collision. According to the police, the cyclist was seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital. The exact circumstances surrounding this accident are now the subject of a police investigation.
Leipzig Lions head into season finale in mid-table
The Leipzig Lions have turned things round. Despite a temporary slump in form, the Blue and Yellows have long since secured their place in the second-tier German American football league, the GFL2. This means the Lions can now relax and chase their final self-imposed goal in front of their home crowd in the season’s closing match tomorrow, Saturday 22 August.
“The season has had its ups and downs, but in the end, pride in what we’ve achieved clearly outweighs everything else,” Lions captain Arn Mazomeit told the LZ. “Given our budget and the fact that this is only our second year in the GFL2, we started the season with relatively high expectations. The aim was a mid-table finish and a balanced win-loss record. We hit a bit of a dip at the start of the second half of the season. It seemed as though some of us were resting on our laurels, thinking we’d already secured our place in the league.
We addressed that within the team, and we can be all the more proud of the performance that saw us stage a comeback in the final few matches. Regardless of how tomorrow’s match turns out, we are already confirmed as fourth out of seven teams. We need just one more win to achieve a balanced win-loss record and thus meet all our season’s targets.”
However, such a win would certainly be a major surprise, as the Krefeld Ravens have won all nine of their matches in the North Group so far and have therefore already been confirmed as group winners. But anyone who doesn’t want to miss out on a potential football miracle should go and watch the match for themselves tomorrow at 3 pm at the Camillo Ugi Sports Park in Markkleeberg.

Two arrests following a knife attack in Lindenau
On Thursday evening at around 8.15 pm, a 29-year-old shop assistant was injured by a knife during an altercation in a shop on Henricistraße at Lindenauer Markt. The Leipzig Police Headquarters reported this today. The man even had to be admitted to hospital as an in-patient due to his injuries.
According to witness statements, police officers apprehended a suspect in the immediate vicinity. They were also able to seize the alleged weapon used in the attack. A check also revealed that the 42-year-old was already the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Leipzig Magistrates’ Court on the grounds of strong suspicion of several criminal offences, including grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest. He was brought before a criminal court judge, who ordered the arrest warrant to be executed. The man was remanded in custody at a prison.
In addition, a 28-year-old man was also arrested at the scene of the crime; the Leipzig Public Prosecutor’s Office had issued an enforcement warrant against him for an unpaid fine. He was also sent to prison to serve his substitute custodial sentence. Investigations into the circumstances and the exact sequence of events are ongoing.

In 36 cases, the fires were even started deliberately, whilst 272 were attributed to negligence. The risk of fire is set to rise in large parts of the country over the coming days due to extreme heat, drought and strong winds.
