Two people were injured today in a road traffic accident at the junction of Kurt-Eisner-Straße and August-Bebel-Straße – a car collided with a bicycle. In the east of Leipzig, a major link road several kilometres long has now been reopened following two months of renovation work. And: The official launch of the 2026 ‘Gutes Leben Leipzig’ festival week took place today at the main railway station. The LZ summarises the key events in Leipzig and beyond on Friday, 11 September 2026.
“Deep in the Eeeast”, the road is finished
“Deep in the Eeeast, where the road leads out of Leipzig, the road is finally fully open again.” Herbert Grönemeyer might well have sung this traffic report in a similar vein. Unfortunately, however, he would not yet have heard about the completion of Brandiser Straße. That’s why we’re writing about it here now. Without a tune – and, of course, in a completely serious manner. Because, after two months of construction, the road link from Mölkau, via Baalsdorf, to Hirschfeld has been reopened to traffic.
This covers a stretch of around 4.2 kilometres – starting at the eastern end of Zweinaundorfer Straße, passing under the A14 motorway, and continuing to the Hirschfeld roundabout. The surface layers of this heavily used road had been severely damaged, with ruts and cracks posing a risk to road safety. The entire road structure was resurfaced over the summer at a cost of around 1.3 million euros. The work is now complete.
Two injured in accident in the Südvorstadt
A serious road accident in which two people were injured took place this Friday lunchtime in Leipzig’s Südvorstadt district. At around 11.45 am, a collision occurred between a car and an e-bike at the junction of Kurt-Eisner-Straße and August-Bebel-Straße. A 19-year-old was driving his red Peugeot eastwards along Kurt-Eisner-Straße. At the same time, a 38-year-old was cycling northwards along August-Bebel-Straße on his e-bike.
At the junction of the two streets, the two vehicles collided – for reasons yet to be determined. In the process, the Peugeot apparently lost control, knocked over a road sign and a traffic light, and also damaged two parked cars. The cyclist was seriously injured in the accident and had to be taken to hospital for further medical treatment. The young driver also required medical attention, which he received as an outpatient at a hospital.
The road was completely closed for over two hours whilst the accident was being investigated. Traffic was not able to resume until around 2 pm. The traffic accident investigation unit is now investigating the circumstances of the accident and looking into allegations of negligent bodily harm. The total amount of property damage caused cannot yet be definitively estimated.
‘Gutes Leben Leipzig’ festival kicks off its second edition
What defines a good life in Leipzig – today and in the future? Over the next few days, the ‘Gutes Leben Leipzig’ 2026 festival will be exploring this fundamental question. From 12 to 20 September, more than 100 events at various locations across the city will invite visitors to engage with this theme. The second edition of the festival officially kicked off today with the opening event in the Osthalle of Leipzig Central Station.
Guests included Heiko Rosenthal (Die Linke / Councillor for the Environment, Climate, Public Order and Sport for the City of Leipzig) and Kathrin Franke (adviser to the Economy for the Common Good in Central Germany). Following a musical introduction by the Leipzig band “Lipsi Tight”, the festival team welcomed the guests, provided an insight into this year’s programme and introduced the participants. At the same time, a three-hour “Market of Opportunities” provided a chance for initial discussions.
The upcoming festival week is packed with workshops, discussions, city walks, cultural and educational activities, hands-on sessions, concerts and opportunities to meet others. In terms of content, these events explore various aspects of a good life and highlight the diversity with which a good life is already being shaped in Leipzig today. The festival is intended as an invitation to discover new perspectives, engage in conversation with one another and take an active part yourself.

Today, the US was entirely focused on remembrance. Twenty-five years ago, the country – indeed, the whole world – was shaken by several terrorist attacks carried out by the Islamist network Al-Qaeda. The group had hijacked four passenger aircraft, two of which it crashed into and destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Another aircraft struck the Pentagon near Washington, whilst a fourth crashed before reaching its – as yet unknown – target. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. Several former presidents attended today’s memorial service at Ground Zero in New York. Flags at government buildings were flown at half-mast.
A coach from the Netherlands has been involved in an accident in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The vehicle, which had just under 50 people on board, veered off the road, crashed into a crash barrier and then overturned. Five people died in the accident. A further 40 were injured, three of them seriously. The cause of the accident remains unclear at this stage.
In Berlin, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has charged seven suspected members of the radical Islamist group Hamas – of various nationalities. They are accused of being involved in the procurement of weapons. These were to be used in an assassination attempt on Israeli or Jewish targets in Germany or Austria. The State Security Division of the Berlin Court of Appeal must now decide whether to proceed with a trial.
