The LZ summarises the key events of Thursday, 18 June 2026, in Leipzig, Saxony and beyond.

A14: Collision between two cars this morning

On Thursday morning, there was an accident involving a possible hit-and-run on the A14 near Leipzig. This was reported by the Leipziger Volkszeitung.

According to the report, shortly after 08:00, an Audi and a Hyundai collided between the middle and right-hand lanes. The incident occurred in the direction of Dresden between the Schkeuditz and Leipzig-Nord motorway exits. The Audi had to be towed away, whilst the whereabouts of the Hyundai remained unclear. Apparently, no one was injured.

Traffic had to pass the scene of the accident temporarily via the bottleneck in the third lane, which led to traffic jams and delays.

Waste incineration plant near Bautzen affected by fire

Several fire brigades, with a total of around 60 firefighters, were called out early on Thursday morning to a major fire. According to MDR , a waste incineration plant in Lauta (Bautzen district) was affected. The situation is now under control.

It is currently believed that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion whilst waste was being unloaded into a bunker during operations. The plant processes household waste and similar commercial waste for thermal recovery. The exact cause of the fire is to be determined by an investigation.

As far as is currently known, no one on the plant site or in the surrounding area was injured. However, the NINA warning app issued an alert due to the odour nuisance and smoke. People were therefore urged to keep windows and doors closed, switch off ventilation systems and air conditioning, and avoid the affected area. Other incineration plants are to take over the disposal of the residual waste until further notice.
