For the fourth time this year, the CDU’s constituency office in Möckern has been the target of political attacks. The police are investigating, but have also been called upon to look into two new arson incidents that need to be solved. And: The SC DHfK handball team have unveiled their kit for the coming season – no frills. The LZ summarises the key events from Wednesday, 15 July 2026, in Leipzig and beyond.

Graffiti attack on CDU office

Hammer and sickle against the CDU: Last night, the joint CDU constituency office of Leipzig’s Members of the Bundestag and Landtag, Jens Lehmann and Rick Ulbricht, on Georg-Schumann-Straße in Möckern, was targeted with political graffiti. The graffiti was ‘signed’ with a hammer and sickle – possibly a reference to the perpetrators’ suspected communist motives. The CDU reported the incident to the police immediately, and the police and state security services have launched an investigation.

“Unfortunately, this is now the fourth such incident this year,” said Rick Ulbricht, a member of the state parliament who has his constituency office at the site, in a press release. “I chose this central location on Georg-Schumann-Straße for the office because it is here that citizens see us as their point of contact and, as their elected representatives, we are easily accessible to the public.” Ulbricht added: “Democracy thrives on discourse and differing opinions. Violence and extremism must never be a means to that end.” The constituency office has been operating at this location since January 2025.

Two fires in Leipzig

There were two fires in Leipzig yesterday. This was announced today by the Leipzig Police Headquarters. In broad daylight, around midday, the fire brigade was first called out to Grünau-Nord. A fire had broken out in the basement of a block of flats for reasons as yet unknown. Although the fire was extinguished at an early stage, a 17-year-old was injured by smoke inhalation. The teenager was taken to hospital as a precaution and treated as an outpatient.

In the late afternoon, at around 5.40 pm, the emergency services were called out once again. This time, flames were reported at a vocational training centre on Knautnaundorfer Straße, in the Knautkleeberg-Knauthain district. Several bushes in front of the building had caught fire, causing significant damage to the school’s façade. No figures are yet available regarding the extent of the damage. The relevant specialist unit of the Leipzig Criminal Investigation Department is investigating.

Down-to-earth SC DHfK jersey unveiled

It was a worst-case scenario for Handball Leipzig: after eleven years of uninterrupted membership of the “strongest league in the world” – the Handball Bundesliga – SC DHfK have been relegated. In the upcoming new season in the second division, the aim is now to secure immediate promotion – through honesty, humility, team spirit and a close connection to Leipzig. The club also wishes to reflect these virtues in its new players’ jersey, unveiled today.

“No glitz. No glamour. Just handball as it’s lived in Leipzig – with heart, commitment and two hands that get stuck in,” is how SC DHfK describes the attitude. The new kit is designed to combine tradition and modernity. “The striking vertical stripes give the classic green and white a contemporary look and make a clear statement on the court. At the same time, the minimalist design makes the kit more than just matchwear.” It is intended to express a club identity that, in terms of kit, also prioritises suitability for everyday wear.

The author – a middle-aged sports nostalgic – concludes: with its “down-to-earth” and “honest” kit, SC DHfK has probably created the finest playing shirt the Green-Whites have ever worn on the court. I’m won over by its classic simplicity, the block stripes in two shades of green, and the white trim on the cuffs and collar. In terms of fashion, the Leipzig team are already well ahead – now they just need to follow suit on the court.

What else was important:

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) believes the coalition is on the right track. He expressed this view today at his summer press conference. Merz sees positive results, for example with regard to the reform of statutory health insurance. At the same time, he is trying to identify the reasons behind his poor poll ratings. Regarding the upcoming state elections in the east, he once again emphasised his rejection of any potential cooperation with the AfD or the Left Party.

The far-right extremist Marla-Svenja Liebich has been transferred from custody in the Czech Republic to a women’s prison in Chemnitz. The 55-year-old, who was arrested in Krasna, the Czech Republic, in early April under a European arrest warrant, had lodged an appeal against her extradition several weeks ago. This was rejected, meaning Liebich must now serve her one-and-a-half-year prison sentence in Saxony. The extradition is said to have proceeded without incident.

The UK plans to extend its social media regulations for young people. Not only is a ban on under-16s under discussion, but also restrictions on use for young people who are already 16 or 17 years old. According to the government’s plans, access to Facebook, Instagram and similar platforms is to be blocked for them between midnight and 6 am in future.
