Several major summer roadworks are starting today across the city; whilst these will initially cause some inconvenience, they are set to improve the traffic situation in the long term. Leipzig’s public transport operator is discontinuing a night bus route. ZiMMT e.V. is helping people who are aware of sexual violence to take action rather than stand by and watch – and, from today, the university is offering its students a sports-based holiday programme.
Kurt-Eisner-Straße is being renovated
It forms part of the key east-west arterial route in Leipzig’s road network. However, driving along Kurt-Eisner-Straße has become an increasingly bumpy experience for anything with wheels. Yet today, the urgently needed renovation work between August-Bebel-Straße and Fockestraße begins. With east-west traffic having been repeatedly disrupted recently due to repeated closures of Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, the former grand boulevard from the Wilhelminian era is now becoming a bottleneck – and a traffic trap.
Over the coming weeks, the worn-out asphalt surface course will be milled off and then replaced. To allow for the construction work, the outbound carriageway will be closed from today, with traffic diverted to the opposite carriageway. During this phase, the ‘Fockestraße’ bus stop (outbound) for bus routes 60 and 74 will be relocated eastwards to the area in front of August-Bebel-Straße, near house number 19.
From 21 July, the outbound carriageway will be closed. Traffic will then be channelled along one side of the road, so that one lane is available in each direction and no diversion is required. For this phase of the works, the bus stop will be moved behind August-Bebel-Straße, near house number 44.
The works are due to be completed by the end of July and will cost a total of around 150,000 euros. Once completed, the city will introduce a 30 zone along the entire stretch between August-Bebel-Straße and Arthur-Hoffmann-Straße to reduce noise pollution. The city’s interactive map provides an overview of other roadworks and traffic restrictions on Leipzig’s road network.

Traffic will also be tight in the north and south-east
Two new roadworks projects, which will have a significant impact on traffic over an extended period, are starting today in the north of the city. A construction project on Ludwig-Beck-Straße is particularly extensive. According to the official construction site overview, the works will run from 13 July 2026 to 12 November 2027.
As well as full road closures, no-stopping and no-parking restrictions are also planned. Several construction phases will also involve Breitenfelder Straße, Hoepnerstraße, Jägerstraße, Stauffenbergstraße, Hans-Oster-Straße and Roßlauer Straße. As the overview indicates, traffic diversions may change depending on the progress of the works.
Leisniger Straße will also be fully closed from today. A section of Dürrstraße is also included in the construction works. According to the construction site overview provided by the Leipziger Gruppe, this work will last until 21 August. Residents and local traffic should expect changes to access routes during the construction period.

LVB scraps night bus
No more XL at night! The “NXL” airport bus will run for the last time at the stroke of midnight tomorrow. And with that, it will be history. The service will run for the final time between Leipzig Central Station and Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of 13 to 14 July.

Important for public transport enthusiasts: departures are from the east side of the main station at 0.50 am and 2.22 am, and from the airport at 1.35 am and 3.05 am. According to the LVB, this marks the end of the pilot scheme, as funding is being withdrawn due to low demand. The “NXL” connected the main station to the airport via Eutritzsch, Gohlis, Möckern and Lindenthal without the need to change buses.
For regular journeys by public transport, only the S-Bahn lines S5 and S5X are now available. In the summer of 2024, Leipzig’s public transport operator had launched the trial service to connect the airport and surrounding businesses to the local transport network even during the night.

Help for those who need to be able to help
No longer standing by idly when sexual violence is witnessed in one’s own circle. What is horrific for the victims all too often leaves those aware of these offences feeling at a loss.
Today, ZiMMT e. V. is hosting a discussion and advice evening at Torgauer Straße 80, entitled “Sexual violence in your social circle – what can you do?”. Organised by ABL-Awareness and the Awareness Institute, the event begins at 7 pm and ends at 10 pm. The focus is on how people in their personal circles can respond to sexual violence and provide appropriate support to those affected.
Among other things, the discussion will address behaviours such as ignoring the issue, trivialising it, paternalistic behaviour or excessive identification, whilst also highlighting ways to take responsibility and influence group structures preventatively. The event will be held in German; English whispered translations can be provided at short notice if required.
According to the organisers, registration is not required. A suggested donation of five euros at the door is considered admission; there is no fixed, mandatory fee. ZiMMT e. V. points out that events are generally reserved for members of the association, although a free one-day membership can be taken out on the spot. Enquiries regarding the content can be made by email to ABL-Awareness@mail36.net.
A spurt instead of the beach
The summer semester break is finally here. It’s not long enough for a proper holiday, and you’ve once again failed to land a holiday job (or missed the deadline for applying). To help you avoid boredom, the educational provider has the solution: today, the University of Leipzig is launching its health and fitness programme for the summer semester break.
Depending on the programme, sessions take place at various sports facilities across the university; the specific course times depend on the programme selected. The programme comprises numerous courses on physical prevention, exercise and health promotion. Students, staff and, for selected programmes, guests are all welcome to take part in this extensive programme of activities.
