Far too big for a sandwich tin! The world’s officially longest Mettbrötchen was made in Saxony at the weekend. In Leipzig city centre, an altercation between two men left one man seriously injured. And: Whilst RB Leipzig celebrated another goal-fest, the women’s handball team at HC Leipzig were given a proper thrashing. The LZ summarises the key events from the weekend of 6–7 November 2026 in Leipzig and beyond.
Mett record for Saxony!
Can you believe it!? Since this weekend, Saxony has held the
official record for the world’s longest
Mettbrötchen. The hearty snack was prepared to mark the opening
of a furniture shop in Siebenlehn (Central Saxony) and measures an
impressive 59.19 metres in length – as confirmed by the
Record Institute for Germany (RID). As there was no existing
record in the ‘Mett’ category, the title required surpassing the
world’s longest fish roll. That had been produced just two months
ago – also by Möbel Höffner – and measured just under 52 metres.
But don’t mess with Mett! The bread roll with the ‘construction worker’s spread’ easily surpassed this mark. However, it wasn’t just the sheer length that counted. The classic preparation method was also important to the jury. Specially baked baguettes were therefore sliced lengthways, and the bottom half was spread continuously with a total of 20 kilograms of Mett and topped with raw onions, before the top half – already cut into portion-sized pieces – was placed back on top. “The RID has established a new record category in Siebenlehn and hopes for lively competition in the future. I am delighted that we were able to officially recognise this special achievement today with an RID record certificate,” said record judge Lisa Nowakowski, who was also impressed by the giant bread roll.
Man seriously injured following altercation in Leipzig city centre
A 36-year-old man was seriously injured on Saturday evening during a physical altercation in Leipzig city centre. The incident took place at around 8 pm in the vicinity of Richard-Wagner-Straße.
According to the current state of the investigation, the 36-year-old and a man who has not yet been identified initially became involved in a verbal altercation for reasons as yet unknown. This escalated into a physical altercation, during which the 36-year-old was allegedly seriously injured with a sharp object.
Several passers-by administered first aid and alerted the ambulance service. Meanwhile, the suspected assailant fled towards the main railway station. The police are investigating on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The circumstances behind the dispute and the question of which object was used in the attack are still under investigation.
RB Leipzig in fine scoring form against Augsburg too
Only Manchester City have managed to take any points from Leipzig’s RB Arena so far this season. In the Bundesliga, however, visiting teams have come away empty-handed. FC Augsburg, too, had little to offer in the face of the Rasenballer’s goal-scoring prowess on Saturday. Although they took a 0–1 lead in the very first minute through Anton Kade, a quick-fire double from Ezechiel Banzuzi (34’) and Christopher Nkunku (35’) turned the match around early on. Captain David Raum even extended the lead to 3–1 before half-time.
Thanks to another quick-fire pair of goals in the second half – from Romulo (60’) and Christoph Baumgartner (66’) – RBL pulled away from the Bavarian Swabians to an unassailable 5–1 lead. Just before the final whistle, the visitors managed to pull one back through Uchenna Ogundu to make it 5–2. Having now scored 27 goals, RBL are currently the second-highest scoring team in the league behind FC Bayern (29). This means that manager Martin Demichelis’s side remain in a Champions League spot after Matchday 9.
After the final whistle, defender Willi Orban was honoured for his 400th appearance in an RBL shirt. The 34-year-old Hungarian international has been with the Rasenballer for over eleven years. He was signed in the summer of 2015 by the club, which was then still in the second division, and was promoted to the Bundesliga straight away in his first season with RB. Orban has since made 268 appearances for the club, including 42 appearances in the Champions League.
HC Leipzig thrashed by Thüringer HC
In the traditional Central German derby, Bundesliga newcomers HC Leipzig suffered a heavy defeat today at the hands of the new league leaders, Thüringer HC. Without their injured key players Jana Walther, Lisa Lammich and Laura Klocke, the Blue-Yellows were thoroughly outclassed at the Salza-Halle as early as the first half. They went into the break trailing by 20(!) goals at 6–26. Although Leipzig played better in the second half, the final score of 21:44 was still by far their heaviest defeat since HCL’s return to the 1st Bundesliga. With just one point from eight matches, coach Erik Töpfer’s team remain bottom of the table.

Other important news:
Fatal shootings on Saturday sent the Polish city of Kraków into a state of shock. The police were able to arrest the suspected gunman. He had fired indiscriminately in the city centre, killing six people; two police officers were also critically injured. It also emerged that the 24-year-old’s parents and sister had previously been killed in their home. The motives for the attack remain unclear. Poland’s President Nawrocki has declared two days of national mourning.
After the White House’s most recent press secretary was forced to step down after just a few days, US President Donald Trump has now put forward a new candidate. The candidate is Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The two have been friends for years and plan to meet on Monday for talks. Trump also named six other MMA fighters whom he hopes White will bring on board as advisers.
On Sunday, right in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin, a 22-year-old man replaced the German flag with a Palestinian flag. Around midday, the man had climbed the almost 30-metre-high flagpole to carry out this act. Two other men assisted him. After about an hour, the fire brigade removed the flag, and the three men involved were arrested. The police took their details, issued orders to leave the area and released the two accomplices. The climber, however, remained in custody. The State Security Service has now launched an investigation.
