The heat-related tram disruption is over! From tomorrow, LVB will be running all services on their normal routes again. But be warned: the summer network of diversion routes due to roadworks also has a few quirks of its own. Also: the police are searching for a bus thug who is still at large. And: BSG Chemie have a home match to kick off the Regionalliga season, whilst Lok are away. The derby is then set for the autumn. The LZ summarises the key events from Wednesday, 8 July 2026, in Leipzig and beyond.
Trams: And they’re moving after all!
Things had really gone off the rails with the trams in Leipzig. A play on words and a good week and a half later, the transport authority can finally give the all-clear: “From tomorrow, all LVB trams will be running again on the planned construction-related route network,” was the relieved announcement today. This means that lines 3, 7 and 15 will once again run between Angerbrücke and Goerdelerring. The combined routes 12 and 14 will chime their way along the Dittrichring between the New Town Hall and the Main Fire Station, with route 12 thus connecting Gohlis-Nord to the rest of the network. And as the icing on the cake, route 8 will also be back in service from tomorrow.
“30 kilometres of contaminated track have been cleaned and 150 sets of points repaired. This was a massive undertaking, achieved through the joint efforts of around 1,500 employees from LVB and the Leipzig Group, as well as 550 volunteers. We greatly appreciate this commitment and would like to express our heartfelt thanks,” says LVB Managing Director Ulf Middelberg. “That was Leipzig teamwork in action.”
As the summer holidays coincide with the construction season, there are nevertheless a few special arrangements to bear in mind over the coming weeks. Due to track renewal works at the main station and in Gohlis, LVB services will continue to operate according to the construction-related route network plan (linked here) until 16 August. Night-time services have also been adjusted: during this period, Nightliner departures will be centralised on Goethestraße. This is the last bottleneck within the route network and is currently still being cleared of joint sealant.
Police search for bus attacker
Yesterday, Tuesday, began with a shocking experience for a 46-year-old man. As the Leipzig Police Headquarters reported today, at around 3 am on the N6 Nightliner bus route, he was first provoked by an unknown man, then physically attacked and beaten up. The 46-year-old subsequently fled the bus at the next stop and even had to be treated in hospital for the “significant injuries” he sustained.
However, the perpetrator, who had boarded the bus with another person at the Leonhardstraße stop in Mockau, has not yet been identified. The police have launched an investigation into the assault and are seeking relevant information based on the following description of the suspect: dark blond-brown hair, brown moustache, tattoo on his upper body; clothing: beige shorts, Hawaiian shirt. The police are placing particular hope in the other passengers who were also travelling on the bus.
NOFV publishes Regionalliga fixture list
The World Cup is all well and good, but thousands of Leipzig football fans have been waiting for one thing above all else: the North-East Regional League fixture list! After all, there are only two and a half weeks to go until the new season kicks off on the last weekend in July. On Wednesday evening – just a short while ago – the North-East German Football Association (NOFV) finally pressed the button and revealed the secret.
However, the exact kick-off times for the first few matchdays will not be announced until tomorrow. One thing is certain, though: BSG Chemie can look forward to kicking off the season at home. The Leutzsch-based side will host SV Babelsberg 03 to mark the start of the season. Regionalliga champions 1. FC Lok, on the other hand, will have to start with an away fixture at FSV 63 Luckenwalde. The ever-young and always somewhat heated Leipzig city derby between Lok and Chemie is scheduled for matchday 13 – initially in Probstheida. This will take place on the weekend of 17–18 October 2026. An overview of all matchdays is available via this link on fussball.de.
What the LZ reported on today:
Hello Leipzig: Here’s how Wednesday 8 July 2026 begins
The City Council met: ‘Zoo of the Future’ granted an additional €22 million in funding.
Brutal attack with an iron bar: Regional Court sends man back to a psychiatric hospital.
What else was important:
At least two girls have been seriously injured in a violent incident at the Welfen Gymnasium in Schongau, Upper Bavaria. The pupils, who fortunately are not in a life-threatening condition, are being treated in hospital. According to the police, there are indications that this was a rampage. A 16-year-old has been arrested as a suspect; he is believed to be a former pupil of the school.
The Berlin Regional Court has sentenced a palliative care doctor to life imprisonment for multiple murders and has recognised the particularly grave nature of his guilt. As a doctor working for an outpatient care service, the defendant had administered a lethal mixture of drugs to 15 seriously ill people. He admitted to twelve killings in court, stating that, from his point of view, he had wanted to alleviate suffering. Further charges are likely to follow soon, as the public prosecutor’s office is still investigating 76 further suspected cases.
At the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, US President Trump threatened new attacks on Iran. For the time being, he also ruled out negotiations with representatives of the country, describing them as scum and liars. Trump did not hold back on his criticism of NATO partners Spain and Germany either, claiming they had let him down in the war against Iran. He threatened to sever trade relations with Spain.
